/z/ is a fricative consonant that is formed by passing air through a narrow channel between the tip of the tongue and the alveoli. The lips are not rounded. The vocal cords vibrate when producing the /z/. It's 'voiced'. The most common writing patterns are 'z', 'zz', 's' between Vowels, 'se' after vowel and endings 's', 'es', 'ism', 'x' before vowel. Although it presents many exceptions.
