/w/ is an approximate consonant, which is simply a quick pronunciation of the vowel /u/ the lips are rounded even more than with the vowel /u/, but you must also feel as if they vibrate. The vocal cords vibrate when producing the /w/. It's 'voiced'. The most common writing patterns are 'w', 'wh', 'u' after 'q', 'g' and 's'. Although it presents many exceptions.
