/j/ it is an approximant, it is a fast pronunciation of the vowel /i/ but the tongue is closer to the palate. There should be no friction. The vocal cords vibrate when producing the /j/. It's 'voiced'. The most common writing patterns are 'y', 'i' between consonant and vowel, 'u' and 'ue'
